NEW YORK - On February 26, the Armenian Students' Association of New York, the New York University Armenian Hokee Club, and Land and Culture Organization will host a slide talk on "Armenian Manuscripts, Monasteries, and Miracles of the Middle Ages" by Professor Lucy Der Manuelian at the Kimmel Center on the New York University (NYU) campus.

Professor Manuelian is the Arthur H. Dadian and Ara Oztemal Professor of Armenian Art and Architectural History in the Department of Art History at Tufts University. She has been a pioneer in the filed of Armenian art and architectural history, and has made invaluable contributions to this area of study.

Professor Der Manuelian received her BA degree from Radcliffe Collage, was appointed a Fellow at the Radcliffe Institute, and received her MA and PhD degress in art history from Boston University. She was the first person in the United States to write a PhD dissertation in the field of Armenian art.

During the Cold War, Professor Der Manuelian lived in the former Soviet Union for many months at a time to study this subject. Despite encountering many obstacles and challenges, she succeeded in photographing, studying, and writing about hundreds of medieval monasteries in mountainous regions all over the country.

She authored three volumes and co-authored a fourth, titled Armenian Architecture published by the Armenian Architectural Archives Project. Her publications also include "Weavers, Merchants and Kings: The Inscribed Tugs of Armenia," the major articles on Armnenian art for the Dictionary of the Middle Ages and The Dictionary of Art; and papers on medieval Armenian sculpture.

Professor Der Manuelian has also organized and written the catalogue for the University of Michigan exhibit titled "The Gregorian Collection." She co-authored the catalogue, and was a consultant and lecturer for the Kimbell Art Museum's exhibit titled "Weavers, Marchants and Kings: The Inscribed Rugs of Armenia," which traveled to five museums in the US. Having been the subject of many newspaper, radio, and television interviews, Professor Der Manuelian has introduced Armenian history and art to millions of people here and in other countries, including 142 million listeners to Voice of America broadcasts, also appearing on the McNeil-Lehrer News Hour and other television programs.

Additionaly, Der Manuelian wrote, narrated, and produced a television film shown at several museums with the exhibit "Weavers Merchants and Kings: The Inscribed Rugs of Armenia" and shown on television in New York, Montreal, Los Angeles, Toronto, and Boston. She has also written and narrated two documentaries on Armenia art for Montreal's cable television.

Her most recent documentary, "Lost Treasures of Christianity: The Ancient Monuments of Armenia," which was shot in Armenia, was broadcast by 58 PBS stations in major cities in the US inluding New York, Boston, Detroit, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Chicago, and many times by NJN Public Television's network stations in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Delaware.

American Public Television is distributing the film internationally, with the first public viewing of the film held at the US Embassy in Armenia. Boston's Museum of Fine Arts presented it in its film program series and the British Library showed it in its "Treasures from the Ark: 1700 Years of Armenian Christian Art" exhibit.

Professor Der Manuelian has been teaching at Tufts University since 1984 when she was appointedto the Lectureship in Armenian Art and Architecture, the first teaching position in the United States dedicated to this field. Professor Der Manuelian held the Lectureship post from 1984-1989 when she was appointed to the newly established Dadian/Oztemel Professorship. This chair is the first endowed professorship in the field of Armenian art ever established at any university, and Der Manuelian is the first appointee.

In addition to her university teaching, Professor Der Manuelian has given over 1.0000 public lectures in 11 countries at various museums, including the Metropoliten Museum of New York and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. She has also spoken at universities, the Horward and Radcliffe alumni clubs, the World Affairs Council, community and church groups, the Courtauld Institute in London, the Smithsonian Institution, and the American Embassy in Moscow.
