World Library and Information Conference in Oslo 2005 was indeed a success. We had a very busy week with a
combination of business meetings, interesting papers and presentations, and social program, all in a beautiful and
sunny summer weather of Oslo.
In our standing committee meetings we said goodbye to several colleagues and welcomed new friends from around
the world. Julia Gelfand had served her two terms as the chair and her wonderful work in the leadership of the
section was acknowledged with great appreciation. We are happy to know that Julia will continue to work in the
standing committee in the coming years. Ray and I hope to be able to meet the standards set by Julia in keeping
the section thriving.
This issue of the section newsletter marks the end of an era. This is the last issue that will be printed and mailed to
all section members. It was decided in Oslo that in 2006 the STL newsletter will go electronic only with copies
printed on demand. The electronic newsletter will be available through the section homepage at
http://www.ifla.org/VII/s7/index.htm and calls for content will be solicited among members via e-mail.
In the coming weeks the section review 2001-2004 will be sent to the IFLA Professional board for evaluation.
Deadlines are also quickly approaching for the next conference and plans are underway to organize an open
session and a study tour. You will find the exciting STL call for papers for Seoul 2006 later in this newsletter.
I hope to that 2006 will be a good year for the members of the section. I hope that we will see many of you
participate in our section activities in conjunction with the coming conferences. Also, please share with us your
experiences and insights about science and technology librarianship via this newsletter or the section electronic
mailing list (http://infoserv.inist.fr/wwsympa.fcgi/info/stl-sc). Please keep Ray and I posted about what is happening
in your part of the world.
With best wishes
Irma Pasanen
