GATEWAY GENOCIDE

The “Gateway Genocide” Project represents a mechanism of virtual integration of information resourses about the Armenian Genocide existing in the Internet, detailed as by their disposition in the servers of different organizations, so in the form of responsibility for their content. Its realization of the professional segmentation of the entire Internet networking oriented on the elucidation of historical events, which took place from 1875 to 1923 in the Ottoman Empire, particularly the Armenian Genocide of 1915, as well as of the problems resulting from the mentioned events, which will allow specialists to save time and spare strength for the search of other published materials and simplifies the tracking of new ones, represents a more complete elucidation of the “Armenian Cause”.

The “Gateway Genocide” Project must be a modern mechanism of scientific materials spreading in the professional community of specialists. The presented mechanism doesn’t require expenses for its maintenance and gives an opportunity and great chances to members of the community for professional cooperation and self organization.

OUTRAGES OF GATEWAY GENOCIDE WORKING
  1. The system collects information from a great number of resourses, belonging to different scientific and educational organizations, as well as in Armenia, and also abroad, which join the project;
  2. this information represents description of resourses, which automatically add to a united data base after each collection of updates from servers of organizations;
  3. Collection of updates mostly happens daily (in general it is regulated by the organizations);
  4. the full versions of resourses (full texts of the articles, materials, etc.) stay in the servers of organizations, and descriptions contained references on them;
  5. organizations themselves decide to participate in this system of the dissemination of scientific materials and about including of their electronic collections (archives of the electronic publishings, online catalogues, libraries, etc.) to the data base;
  6. for the including of its collection to the data base, the organization must prepare a description of publications of the collection and disseminate prepared files to the Internet, from where they will automatically be called by the “Gateway Genocide” system;
  7. the organization itself defines quantity, content and composition of the collection;
  8. presence of references in the descriptions of full texts of materials defines the organization itself, therefore some collections have no such references (for example online catalogues of the libraries’ new entrances can’t have such references at all);
  9. the “Gateway Genocide” system must allow the expansion of the data base by the adding of new types of data.

PECULIARITIES OF THE GATEWAY GENOCIDE SYSTEM

In the system the results of information activity of professionals and specialists are integrated. In the system there must be open archives for the free publishing of the electronic version of materials. This permits closing the “circulation” in the information space of “Gateway Genocide”: researchers receive materials from it, create their new materials and replace them in the same information space. The service of the “Gateway Genocide” system not only provides support and actualization of the database of resourses of description, but also is responsible for the notification of users about the appearance of necessary resourses in the data base. It is oriented for reduction of their information overload in case of a large stream of new entrances: All this together begets the effect of united information space, all members of which are guaranteed the efficient learning about events important for them. An intensive stream of information arising during this didn’t reduce the efficiency of the system:
    Expected events
  1. decrease of expenses and technical work for the searching of new information
  2. guaranteed and efficiently notifies users about the appearance of useful resourses in the information space.
  3. Integration of online resourses to the united data base.
  4. technological support of information space functioning in principles of “open code”. All created program means are available for free replication and duplication. Internet technologies of “Gateway Genocide” converts the integral data base into information space, which differs from traditional navigation systems (Yondex, Rambler) by specialization on complex service of needs of members of the professional community.
  5. Interactivity, cooperation on the level of community as a whole, tools of which are using the regularity of looking through by members of the community of the same web pages in the system. The space of given pages is used for the organization of information exchanges between users in the way of “all with all”. Among expected effects are exposure and realization of needs of the given information community. One of the directions of realization is: subsequent development of subsystem of voting, as a mean of cooperation between users of the system and also creation of the means for exposure of mutual interests and interdependency of users on this basis.

THE DATA BASE

The database presents the daily replenishing and renovated multitude of descriptions of different types of information resourses made by specialists all over the world. These resourses are archives of electronic publishings, table of contents of online journals, catalogues of the libraries’ new entrances, and plans of publishing houses.

TECHNOLOGIES OF THE GATEWAY GENOCIDE SYSTEM

The program products of “Gateway Genocide” may be used in other servers, i.e. “Gateway Genocide” system. The “Gateway Genocide” system is created on the principles of “open code”. The “Gateway Genocide” system must have the following program providing:
  1. Network robot which every day (and generally with given regularity) “visited” all sites containing archives/ collections, which are registered in the “Gateway Genocide” database and transfer all their changes to the “Gateway Genocide” system.
  2. Interface for data base working in “Gateway Genocide” forms by several subsystems:
    1. procedure of updates, which realizes maintenance of index lists of the system’s data base and provides remembrance of records entrances times to the base, their changes, assemblage of records made remote in the data base, reediting of popularity of records, etc. This procedure must account the renewal of the base and about the results of transformation of the data base
    2. The XMLisator, which converts files from internal formats of the “Gateway Genocide” data base to more modern and comfortable formation of XML format’s interfaces, this program must account about formed XML files, and also account about mistakes and formation of XML files
    3. indexes of key words, which enables users to search inside the whole base and its separate divisions by given key words
    4. portalogenerator, which is responsible for the generating of files of the table contents of all collections and archives, and also of files from which the main page of “Gateway Genocide” are arranged, summary catalogue of current content of the data base, quantity of new and changed records, and all files created on XML format. This program must every day account any mistakes. This interface is entirely free for users without any restriction. However in the Socionet system there is another part where the servers are disposed, and preliminary registration is demanded (consider the following point).
  3. Private zone, which includes collection of services, which demands from users preliminary registration in the “Gateway Genocide” system, and using the received login/password for access to these services. The user in the private zone receives the following basic possibilities:
    1. to publish research materials and scientific documents in the sections of open archives of “Gateway Genocide” system.
    2. To set the personal information robot to demonstrate a personal interface on the screen of his private zone, the user may leave only that item, types of data, and group of information resourses, which interests him. Filtration of new documents entering the database in compliance with his profile of interests. Delivery to his e-mail address of additions and renovations in the personalized part of data base, and also account about the results of filtration.
    3. to change the parameters of the user’s registration, which are stored in the “Gateway Genocide” system.
  4. Voting subsystem, which is intended for organization of cooperation between users and members of the community of the “Gateway Genocide” . The voting subsystem of “Gateway Genocide” must allow:
    1. formation of a questionnaire by users (question and possible version of replies) and to place it to stand in line for voting
    2. to look through all the suggested questionnaires according to their rank of popularity, which in its turn defines by separate voting for the suggested topic.
    3. after an appointed period the questionnaire, which is at first for voting, moves to stage of active voting, and also this appears on the main page of the “Gateway Genocide” site.
    4. all questionnaires which passed the stage of active voting are stored in the list of active voting; users may see diagrams of changes of voting.
  5. The subsystem, which is intended for calculation of rank of popularity of some articles, sections and archives of the database.

THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE GATEWAY PROJECT
R.Harutyunyan, R. Avagyan, S. Gevorgyan

Soon we will mark the centenary of those sorrowful events, which are known in the annals of history as genocide committed by a government against its people, which compactly lived in those territories historically far earlier (at least 2000 years) before the foundation of the Ottoman Empire. Even now in the different parts of world many facts of genocide were revealed to have been committed by various totalitarian regimes. It is Pol Pot in Cambodia; it is Stalin concerning the whole Soviet people; it is the Taliban movement; it is Saddam Hussein. The drawing of parallels seemed to be excessive, but learning the results of brutalism willy-nilly reaches to the conclusion that the continuation of brutalism against any nation or national group becomes possible in case of the suppression of previous facts. In this way Hitler planned his cannibal crime against Jews in Nazi Germany. As a result, 6 million Jews in 1934-45 were added to 1.5 million victims of the Armenian Genocide of 1915-23.

The world community reacted to the genocide of the Jews, who have entered the Holocaust term into historiography, and created a network of museums and sites. In some countries, such as the USA, Germany and Austria these sites are included in governmental sites or in the sites of embassies of these states.

Analyzing all, which was created in the world in the field of adequate evaluation and presentation of the just claims and demands in Armenian historiography, we have to state that there is much information on paper in leading languages, but in the Internet this problem is presented in discrete islets.

It is very joyous to mark the creation of an association uniting sites about the Armenian Genocide in the USA.The

European community, together with citizens of Turkey and Armenia, is put a dilemma. The times have passed, when we have to agitate hate against the present people of Turkey because of their ancestors’ crime, however our mighty united portal must elucidate, proving that for peaceful coexistence our neighbors must admit their sin as was done by the Nazis, thus exalting their nation amongst others.
